Software? Hmmm.

I've been doing a little research about software developing, and there are many different views. Eric Raymond is a strong advocate of open-source software (See OpenSource.org). The big problem that I see with open-source is this: How in the world are you supposed to make money? I mean yeah, you'll probably provide a good product for free, but how do you make a living off of that?

Of course, open-source does have it's advantages. People can improve on it and tweak it so it does exactly what they want, you can get great people working on your product as a team, and you might have a lot more fun. You also don't have to worry about getting the money, setting up a secure credit-card website, yada yada yada.

I'm not sure whether I want to create open- or closed-source software. Seeing as I have no immediate plans to make a full-fledged program, I don't need to decide right now.

Another note: You should read Eric Raymond's article called "How To Become A Hacker." It's very good.

An Incredible Milestone

It's a milestone. Wikipedia has now published one million articles. That's a seven-digit number! The lucky one millionth story article published was about Jordanhill Railway Station. Other articles created within the same minute included an overview of the Tennessee Commissioner of Financial Institutions, a biography of baseball player Aaron Ledesma, and a look at cellular architecture.

You can find just about anything on Wikipedia. There is even an article on REBOL, which is constantly edited by all the gurus. I have also seen dozens of other sites using their exact design, which Wikipedia is probably making a lot of money off of. I use it for all my research. Sure, you could spend $50 bucks and get Encyclopedia Brittanica with less information, not as good organization, and have to wait for the CD, but, why? My advice: Use Wikipedia.

Peugeot Moovie: Concept Car

The latest extremely odd, but cool, looking concept car is the Peugeot Moovie. I don't know a whole lot about it, but here's some basic facts:
  • It's mostly made of high-density foam and polycarbonite. It has two coats of paint to top everything off, and the lion is made in stereo before being chromeplated.
  • It has two really small wheels in the front, and two huge ones in the back that double as doors.
  • The interior has no rough edges (just like the outside), and really neat yellow-ish colors.

When will we see these on the road? Probably never. The odds of mass production are extremely low. I guess I'll just have to stick with the Honda Fit.

You can see bazillions of other groovy pictures here.
